Proper Tire Air Pressure

The amount of tire air pressure depends on a variety of factors, such as size and weight of tire, fuel economy and vehicle application.

The right tire inflation levels are usually found in the owner’s manual. Car manufacturers also place a tire inflation placard in each vehicle which indicates the proper tire inflation pressure. You can view this placard on the driver’s side doorpost or external edge of the door, in the fuel filler door, or inside of the glove box door. For majority of passenger automobiles, including minivans and pick-ups, the recommended air pressures range from 27 to 32 psi. On the other hand, pickup trucks and SUVs need to have 5 to 8 psi of tire air pressure in order to reflect the larger tire sizes and greater weight of these automobiles.

Take note that tire air pressure changes in conjunction with outside temperatures. During fall, it is recommended that you check your tire air pressure every couple of weeks. Expect to add some air to your tires to maintain the proper inflation. As much as possible, check your tire air pressure when the tire is cold. Tires become hot even after driving as little as a mile. Don't exceed the maximum inflation pressure specified on the sidewall of your tire. Higher tire air pressure increases the risk of tire damage and failure.
